COMMEDIA DELL’ ARTE DAY! On February 25, in cities around the world, theatre companies, scholars, students, and audiences will celebrate Commedia dell’Arte with shows, conferences, lectures, and workshops. This worldwide celebration is proclaimed by the cultural association SAT in support of SAT’s appeal to the nation of Italy and to the United Nations (UNESCO) to recognize Commedia dell’Arte as an official piece of “World Cultural Heritage.” At present, a variety of indigenous art forms including theatre traditions such as Noh and Kabuki are recognized by UNESCO, but Commedia dell’Arte, a living tradition whose influence and importance is undeniable in the history of world theatre, has not yet been recognized.
